Micron to kill off Crucial-branded consumer memory business in 2026

  • Micron is discontinuing the Crucial consumer brand after 29 years to focus on AI and enterprise memory
  • Crucial RAM and SSDs remain available until February 2026, then they’re done
  • PC builders and gamers lose a trusted mid-tier brand as Micron chases higher-margin AI infrastructure

One of PC building’s most trusted names, Crucial, is going to be killed off after almost 30 years of business. The reason? Micron, the company behind it, are planning to pivot hard into enterprise memory and AI hardware instead of serving regular consumers – PC builders and gamers – like you.

This move comes as the demand for AI data centers continues to grow, which in turn keeps hoovering up every memory chip that Micron can produce. Instead of continuing to focus on the consumer RAM sticks and SSDs that made Crucial a household name, Micron will dabble more in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and enterprise storage – the kind of stuff that powers the cloud and ChatGPT.

For now, Crucial-branded products will continue to be sold where they are available, but only until February 2026. After that, Crucial RAM kits or SSDs will be no more. Micron will remain as it is and keep its enterprise products going, but consumer gear is totally out.

According to Micron EVP Sumit Sadana, this was a “difficult decision” for the company. The company thanks its millions of customers and hundreds of partners, but at the end of the day, they need to follow the money. So now, after 29 years of Crucial, here we are.

Good night, sweet prince. Good luck to anyone brave enough to want to build a new PC out there right now.
