  • Valve’s gaming console already reported strong numbers back in 2022
  • Sales is now expected to breach over 3 milion for 2023
  • The growth represents a 14% increase from last year

Sales of the Steam Deck, the portable gaming PC from video game and software company Valve Corporation, is set to hit more than 3 million in unit sales in 2023, according to technology research and advisory group Omdia. This represents around a 14% growth from the number of Steam Deck units sold last year, which reportedly reached 1.6 million.

This boost in sales might seem small at first glance, but it is unlikely to deter Valve, says Omdia Senior Analyst James McWhirter. He also says that Valve is playing the long game with the Steam Deck, and that its end game goes well beyond just the console itself.

Based on market data, Omdia estimated that last year’s sales of the Steam Deck reached around 1.62 million units. Meanwhile, this year’s sales is projected to hit 1.85 million units, which would bring the total number of units sold up to almost 3.5 million.

In a statement included with the Omdia report, McWhirter commented that the small userbase of the Steam Deck is “unlikely to be an area of concern in the short term” for Valve. He adds: “Valve is focused on utilizing early usage data to refine and improve the SteamOS software powering Steam Deck – software which has already enabled the company to translate a large portion of Steam games from the Windows operating system.”

The Steam Deck is one of only a few portable gaming PC options available for those who want to play games that would otherwise only be available on Windows PCs. Although it has limited availability through local malls and various offline stores for now, it can be purchased through several online retail outlets such as GameXtreme and Datablitz.
