Phone makers these days typically announce new high-end stuff in order to get people’s attention. However, Google wants to subvert the now-common expectation that you need to buy a flagship model to get the best of everything.
To that end, the internet giant has just announced the Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. They are the newest additions to the Pixel 3 family and are intended to serve up many high-end phone features at mid-range price points.
In Google’s own words, the two new Pixel 3a models are supposed to bring a lot of essential high-end phone features without having premium price tags. These include things like a great display, powerful camera, long battery, and up-to-date software.
The origin of the Pixel 3a
“These days, you expect a lot from a smartphone. You want a premium camera that can take vivid, share-worthy photos wherever you go. You need a tool that connects you to the world with all your favorite apps and also helps out during the day. And you want a phone that has a battery that’s reliable for long stretches, while it stays secure and up to date with the latest software,” said Mario Queiroz, the General Manager and Vice President of Google’s Pixel division.
“You also don’t want it to break the bank,” he added. “The new Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are all of those things and more, for half the price of premium phones.
The phones may differ from each other physically, as the Pixel 3a has a 5.6-inch display and the Pixel 3a XL has a 6-incher, but at their core, they are essentially the same. Both sport high-end camera features, utilize Google’s HDR+ tech and have certain modes such as Portrait Mode, Super Res Zoom, and Night Sight in the built-in camera.
Google Assistant is also built right in, and it can be activated by simply squeezing the phone in order to send texts, set reminders, and get reminders. A useful Call Screen feature is also present in certain regions — only U.S. and Canada for now — that gives a user information about a caller before they pick up a call.
By far, one of the biggest bits of news about the Pixel 3a series is that both models are set to receive three years of security and OS updates straight from Google itself. They are bound to be safer and more secure in the long run.
Release date and availability
In case you’re curious as to where or when you can buy one of these, you’re going to have to wait unless you’re in the U.S., Canada, Japan, or a few other countries.
They’re already out in the U.S. through AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, Spectrum Mobile (Charter), C Spire and Google Fi. Meanwhile, they won’t be sold yet to those who are in the Philippines.
The Google Pixel 3a is priced only $399 (around Php 20,850) and the Pixel 3a XL costs $479 (around Php 25,000).
