Yup, smart TVs are still a thing. Thankfully, they seem to have gotten better every year. For 2019, Samsung plans to be the first smart TV maker to offer Apple product integration on a level that has never been done before.
The Korea-based gadget giant will start selling smart TVs that come with iTunes Movies, TV shows, and Apple AirPlay 2 support. And not only that, they will also update older models to support these new features as well.
This is according to a recent announcement made right after the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) expo concluded this year in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is said that the change will affect smart TV models sold in a total of 190 countries worldwide.
iTunes Movies and TV Shows preloaded
Primarily, upcoming models of Samsung’s smart TVs will come preloaded with a new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app, where it will be possible to access a user’s existing iTunes library and browse the iTunes store at their leisure. Here, it will be possible to buy or rent from a selection of hundreds of thousands of moies and TV shows, including the largest selection of 4K HDR movies, as you might expect.
The press release also states that iTunes Movies and TV Shows “will work seamlessly with Samsung’s Smart TV Services, such as Universal Guide, the New Bixby and Search,” for a consistent experience across Samsung’s platform.
Apple AirPlay 2 connection
As for the upcoming inclusion of AirPlay 2 support, users of select smart TVs from Samsung should be able to “effortlessly play videos, photos, music, podcasts and more from Apple devices directly.” That includes QLED 4K and 8K TVs, The Frame, and Serif lifestle TVs from Samsung. Other Samsung UHD and HD model TVs are said to be in for it as well.
For those who already own 2018 models of Samsung smart TVs, don’t worry. There will be a firmware update sent out soon to include all of the above, which means the addition of the new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app and AirPlay 2 integration.
According to Won-Jin Lee, the Executive VP of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, it’s all part of the plan to bring the latest and greatest content onto their home entertainment platform. “We pride ourselves on working with top industry leaders to deliver the widest range of content services to our Smart TV platform.” For that, we can’t fault them one bit.
Expect the new smart TV models with the new functionality as well as the corresponding firmware update to older models to come out some time in the second half of this year. We’ll let you know if we hear anything more from Samsung.
